Overview

Depression is a mental illness and when it occurs in the weeks or months after birth it is called postnatal depression.

  • 10 to 15 per cent of all women develop some form of postnatal depression lasting more than two weeks.
  • More than half of these women develop severe depression where treatment is considered necessary.
  • Most serious depressions are apparent in the first month after childbirth, but they can also arise later.
  • Without the right treatment, postnatal depression can last months.

Causes

There are a number of factors that may contribute to postnatal depression. These include:

  • psychological and social factors such as the demands, obligations and responsibilities of being a mother. A new mother may fear that she is inadequate and not able to live up to her own and/or other people's expectations.
  • family factors are also important, including the relationship a mother has with the child's father, and the support she receives from other people.
  • biological factors may also play a role including the hormonal changes that occur following childbirth.
