Overview

Hodgkin's disease is one of a group of diseases called lymphomas. They are all produced by cancers forming in the cells of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a series of microscopic vessels that drain fluid away from the tissues and return it to the blood system. Throughout this system there are small organs called lymph nodes and there are clusters of these nodes around the body especially in the neck, groin and armpits. The spleen is also part of this system.

The lymphomas are divided into two main categories:

  • Hodgkin's disease
  • non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
It is most likely to be diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. The cause of the disease is unknown but there is some evidence that it may be caused by the same virus that causes glandular fever.

Causes

The first sign of this cancer is often an enlarged lymph node which appears without a known cause. The disease can spread to adjacent lymph nodes and later may spread outside the lymph nodes to the lungs, liver, or bone marrow.

The cause is not known. The incidence is 2 in 10,000 people. Hodgkin's lymphoma is most common among people 15 to 35 and 50 to 70 years old.

Symptoms

The first sign is usually firm but painless swelling of the lymph glands. Swelling of the lymph glands is a natural response to infection but in this case the glands are also tender to touch. Other symptoms include tiredness, weight loss, severe night sweats, fever and generalised itchy skin.

Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Skin blushing or flushing
  • Neck pain
  • Hair loss
  • Flank pain
  • Clubbing of the fingers or toes
  • Splenomegaly.

Risk Factors

  • Possible acute non-lymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) as a result of treatment
  • Possible non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
  • Liver failure
  • Adverse effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
